Trauma Therapy/Health Wellness Counseling

Trauma can be both a cause and a result of homelessness. At HousingPlus, our full-time Health and Wellness Counselor uses a trauma-informed approach to counseling to help our tenants improve skills including:

  • crisis prevention
  • safety planning
  • self-regulation
  • assertiveness
  • problem-solving
  • decision-making
  • interpersonal relationships
  • healthy coping strategies

As they are learned and strengthened, each of these skills becomes part of the tenants’ plans to live healthier lifestyles, connect to community-based resources, and reintegrate into a larger community.

While we originally provided trauma services primarily to our female veteran population, we recognized that the life circumstances of childhood trauma, chronic homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence, and mental illness experienced by our non-veteran population also presented trauma-related issues that could be alleviated by counseling. As a result, we now offer health and wellness (trauma) services to all of our households.
