When HousingPlus began its work, we worked with landlords to bring safe, stable apartments into our inventory. We currently have 135 units of scattered site housing, meaning that they are scattered in buildings and neighborhoods around Brooklyn, rather than housed in a single building or complex. Offering tenants such units allows them to be integrated into a wide variety of communities and allows us to seek locations that meet unique tenant needs.
However, in order to make more units of permanent housing available, HousingPlus has entered into partnerships with developers to create partnerships that develop both affordable and supportive housing in the same building. These new developments allow us to house more people and to make services more efficient and accessible by locating our offices inside the building. This setup also offers opportunities for us to engage our tenants in events and activities, building community as well as new lives.
Our first such collaboration was Linwood Park Apartments in East New York, developed in partnership with L&M Development and B&B Urban. The facility opened in 2020 with 100 units total, 30 units of which were set aside for permanent supportive housing.
In 2022, we celebrated the opening of Chestnut Commons, a partnership with the Cypress Hills Development Corporation (CHLDC) and the Mutual Housing Association of New York (MHANY), a 275-unit complex that offered 55 permanent supportive units to HousingPlus tenants. That same year, we broke ground on a new development, Shepherd-Glenmore, in partnership with Spatial Equity, which will welcome tenants soon. Shepherd-Glenmore will have 123 units, 74 of which will be set aside for HousingPlus tenants. Two more buildings, Atlantic King (developed with MHANY) and Van Sinderen (developed with Spatial Equity) will generate 282 new units, 173 of which will be dedicated to permanent supportive housing.
