HousingPlus has a history of developing programs for those who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, ensuring access to services, and advocating for more progressive policies.

Indeed, our first tenants were formerly incarcerated women who had completed their sentences but could not find supportive housing that would accept them. Ever since, we have maintained a commitment to helping this population navigate barriers to re-entry into the community, and set aside a number of our permanent supportive housing units for this population.

We have also led the way in developing alternative-to-detention and alternative-to-incarceration programs. In 2009, we opened the country’s first Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Program for families. This led to the development of our transitional housing program, which currently provides 159 units of supportive housing to divert women and gender expansive people away from unnecessary detention on Rikers and to the services and supports that they need to rebuild their lives.
